Rajshahi Medical University (RMU) is going to set up another medical university in the country to improve health services and medical education. Health ministry sources said an independent and fully-fledged medical university will be established on 68 acres of land in Rajshahi city at a cost of Tk 3,100 crore. Rajshahi Medical University (RMU)’ will be the second medical university in the country. The first one is ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU)’ which is located in Dhaka city.
Rajshahi Medical University is a project of Tk 3,100 crore. Rajshahi Medical University’s submitted proposal has already been passed to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).As per the project proposal, there will remain a 1200-bed hospital along with the medical university in a bid to run academic activities, including research and treatment services to people simultaneously. Health experts said this hospital will play an important role in expanding medical education in the country. In the first phase, around Tk 2,000 crore project will be implemented and then around Tk 1000 crore project will be implemented in the second phase. In the first phase, academic building, administrating building, hospital, school and daycare center will be constructed. The university will be set up on 68 acres land in the Rajshahi city corporation area. There will be 69 departments in the medical university. Already 76 institutes have been affiliated with the university and the number of the affiliated institutes will increase day by day.
Mentioning that the medical university started its initial activities in three buildings of Rajshahi Medical College in 2017, he said already 4th batch of the students are studying in the university. Some 13 government medical colleges, 13 private medical colleges, two government and five private dental colleges, six government and 31 private nursing colleges, one government and two private medical technology institutes and some Unani and Ayurvedic medical colleges are affiliated so far with the medical university.The university has also planned to run PhD, post-graduation courses under eight faculties, they added.
